To have an idea of the number of people who are involved in filmmaking, just watch the credits at the end of a movie! Although directors and producers are the ones who organize all these people, what is the movie business like for everyone else?
Making movies can be exceptionally stressful work. This is partly because a huge amount of money is needed to make movies. Investors, who contribute millions of dollars, expect high-quality results. Another reason is that people engaged in the process have to work very long hours.
Another cause of stress is that most people in the industry do not have permanent jobs – they are hired for one movie at a time. Moreover, while directors and actors can earn millions of dollars, wages for most workers are much lower. There are always fewer jobs than there are people looking for work, so a lot of movie people are unemployed for periods of time.
Three factors that are required for a career in the film industry are talent, experience and personal connection. But that is not all! To succeed in this competitive environment, perseverance is crucial. And there is one more thing: You will need to be able to manage stress!
